Japanese American Wartime Experiences

Join Dr. Newlin as she shares stories of her relatives who were incarcerated at Heart Mountain, and connects the incarceration history to northeast Ohio, where many Japanese Americans settled after the war. 

Join Dr. Donna Nagata, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan, who will describe the long-term impacts of the Japanese American incarceration experience, with a focus on the intergenerational consequences of this historical trauma.  

In this moving and beautifully orchestrated film, internationally acclaimed violinist and songwriter Kaoru Ishibashi, professionally know as Kishi Bashi, travels on a musical journey to understand World War II-era Japanese American incarceration, assimilation, and what it means to be a minority in America today.   

Although the incarceration of Japanese Americans during the war is a painful chapter in American history, there are many beautiful stories that come from this troubling time, one of which involves a children's librarian at the San Diego Public Library, Clara Breed.
