In the 1920’s, a socially awkward Grand Master (John Turturro) breaks out of his chess-obsessed mind when he falls in love with a young woman (Emily Watson) he meets while competing at a world-class tournament in Italy. The film is based on the novel The Defense by Vladimir Nabokov.
