This 1993 historical romantic drama film, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Winona Ryder and Miriam Margolyes, is based on Edith Wharton’s 1920 novel, Age of Innocence, which won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, making Wharton the first woman to win the prize.
New York society scion Newland Archer is engaged to May Welland, but his well-ordered life is upset when he meets May’s unconventional cousin, the Countess Olenska. At first, Newland becomes a defender of the Countess, whose separation from her abusive husband makes her a social outcast in the restrictive high society of late-19th Century New York, but he finds in
her a kindred spirit and they fall in love.
This film is a visually stunning masterpiece with universally acclaimed production design, cinematography and Oscar-winning costumes that magnificently recreate 1870s New York high society
