Dedicated: January 28, 2026
The Lakewood High School 2026 senior Art 4 & AP 2D Design class worked during the fall semester of 2025 on this collaborative mural, designed by Ursula Rosen. Each student planned and illustrated one book page, then worked as a class to develop a cohesive image with the help of their art teacher, Mrs. Dayna Hansen.
The class began by visiting the Lakewood Public Library in August, where they found inspiration in the illustrations of children’s books. The class individually drafted a wide range of possible mural designs throughout September and ultimately narrowed the selection to Ursula’s thumbnail sketch, which evolved into an illustration of piled books. Each student drafted iterations of their own page, experimenting with different color combinations and color schemes in collaboration with their partners on the pages adjacent to their own. The students then used a combination of gouache paint (a new medium to them), colored pencil, and pastels to bring this piece to life. They chose to create “exploding” 3-D elements to give the mural depth and unify the individual pages into one cohesive image.
This mural features distinctive artworks by unique individuals who came together to create a piece that celebrates each student’s ideas and artistic style. The pages are unified by the themes of nature, fantasy, and beauty in mundanity. They are intertwined by 3-D elements, which represent both the escape found through reading and the community found through making art. These students, who have been learning together for two years now, spent hours each day concentrating on a single piece, sharing supplies and working together to meet a deadline. They devoted their time, patience, and creativity to bring more art into our community and our Library.
